[Substantive Committees]

The NWSBA is made up of more than 30 standing and substantive committees.  Substantive Law Committees relate to particular areas of practice where members can learn about changes in the law, network with colleagues in the same field, and help plan CLE programs that are most relevant to their area of practice.

Among other things, it is one of the primary purposes of a Substantive Committee to provide an educational component that rewards CLE credit for seminars that are conducted as well as committee meeting participation. 

With the assistance of the NWSBA staff and the Board of Governors, quality programming is offered in many specialty areas.  Individually, each Committee fulfills its responsibility differently, however, all are guided by the policies of the NWSBA as regulated by the Board of Governors. Committees may vary from year to year depending on current trends.

It is the responsibility of the Chair of a Substantive Committee to:

  • Conduct meetings on a regular basis
  • Notify the Association office of scheduled meetings
  • Complete a "Committee Meeting Report Form" after every meeting. 
  • Host at least one CLE per calendar year
  • Submit at least one article per calendar year to Newsbriefs 
  • Plan your committee objectives
  • Give committee members an opportunity to be active on the committee
  • Keep the NWSBA staff, President and Board of Governors apprised of your activity
  • Evaluate the status and progress of your committee on an annual basis
  • Meet the requirements of the Association office

Association Requirements:

  • You must be a member in order to be on a NWSBA Substantive Committee and receive CLE credit
  • Non-members can join a committee, however, the NWSBA cannot issue CLE credit for their participation
  • CLE certificates will be issued for committee meetings upon submission of the "Committee Report Form"
  • All arrangements for CLE courses should be made directly with the Association office
  • All arrangements must be made and/or confirmed via email at nwsba@sbcglobal.net
  • Copies of course materials, including presenter/speaker bios, are due in the Association office 5 business days prior to the CLE
  • Articles for Newsbriefs are due on the 15th of the month prior to the issue (i.e. January 15th for the February issue)

Committee chairs are appointed to a one-year term and serve at the discretion of the President. An ongoing goal of the Association is to encourage greater committee participation. Joining one of the more than 30 Northwest Suburban Bar Association substantive law or standing committees can provide you with a forum for learning and networking opportunities, as well as assist you in the development of personal leadership skills.

Text from a Word document and other web sites will retain the styles if pasted directly into the editor, and will override your Affiniscape styles. When transferring new content into the editor from an outside source, you should first copy and paste the content into Notepad. That will strip out any previous formatting. You can then paste the content into the Affiniscape editor.
