Providing legal help to people
without lawyers in suburban Cook County is critically important because, at
present, there are many low-income and disadvantaged people in need coming to
court on their own without legal assistance.
The NWSBA has been providing
court-based pro bono assistance for low-income and disadvantaged litigants in
the Third Municipal District of the Circuit Court of Cook County for many
years. In an effort to expand its pro
bono services, the NWSBA has now partnered with a diverse coalition of
organizations: The Chicago Bar
Foundation, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF),
Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO), the Illinois Coalition of Equal Justice and
the Cook County Law Library.
Over the past several years, ILAO and the
Illinois Coalition of Equal Justice have helped to establish legal self help
centers (LSHC) in over 50 of the 100 counties in Illinois. Legal self help centers have been operating
at the Daley Center and in the collar Counties of Lake, McHenry, Kane and
DuPage for at least the past two years.
Building on successful models of LSHCs
in Cook County and elsewhere in Illinois, the NWSBA has launched a courthouse-based
LSHC on a part-time basis, to serve the citizens of the Third
The LSHC at the Third
Municipal courthouse is a facility where citizens can get assistance with
their legal problems and also learn about other pro bono services available
outside the courthouse.
