Legal Self Help Center
The Third District Legal Self Help Center, located in Room 036 at the Rolling Meadows courthouse, is open on Friday mornings from 9am to noon.  The Third District Legal Self Help Center is operated in partnership with

  • Northwest Suburban Bar Association
  • Legal Aid Foundation of Chicago
  • Illinois Legal Aid Online
  • Chicago Bar Foundation
  • Illinois Coalition for Equal Justice

Providing legal help to people without lawyers in suburban Cook County is critically important because, at present, there are many low-income and disadvantaged people in need coming to court on their own without legal assistance.

The NWSBA has been providing court-based pro bono assistance for low-income and disadvantaged litigants in the Third Municipal District of the Circuit Court of Cook County for many years. In an effort to expand its pro bono services, the NWSBA has now partnered with a diverse coalition of organizations: The Chicago Bar Foundation, the Legal Assistance Foundation of Metropolitan Chicago (LAF), Illinois Legal Aid Online (ILAO), the Illinois Coalition of Equal Justice and the Cook County Law Library.

Over the past several years, ILAO and the Illinois Coalition of Equal Justice have helped to establish legal self help centers (LSHC) in over 50 of the 100 counties in Illinois. Legal self help centers have been operating at the Daley Center and in the collar Counties of Lake, McHenry, Kane and DuPage for at least the past two years.

Building on successful models of LSHCs in Cook County and elsewhere in Illinois, the NWSBA has launched a courthouse-based LSHC on a part-time basis, to serve the citizens of the Third Municipal District.

The LSHC at the Third Municipal courthouse is a facility where citizens can get assistance with their legal problems and also learn about other pro bono services available outside the courthouse.

THE PRO BONO & LEGAL SELF HELP CENTER COMMITTEE is looking for volunteers to help out in the Legal Self Help Center, located in the lower level of the  Third Municipal District Courthouse.  Volunteers will be required to attend training sessions which are offered periodically, as needed.  For more information, or if you would like to volunteer to help, please call one of the committee co-chairs: Ronald F. Wittmeyer at 847-577-1123 or Lance Ziebell at 847-241-1774.  Those eligible to volunteer are paralegals, legal assistants, and attorneys.
