We are excited to hear our presenter, Destiny Peery, JD, PhD, speak about Understanding the Effects of Bias on Women in Law

Session Description: We can all point to instances of that subtle, sometimes ambiguous, biases that affect women throughout our lives - in the workplace, in the home, and in representations of women in society. This lunch talk will offer an opportunity to learn about the research on existence of implicit gender biases and the effects while also offering an opportunity for discussion about what to do in the face of it. The talk will focus on the distinction between stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination, explicit and implicit bias, and the ways in which implicit biases can both affect the way that we think about ourselves and others, but also the way that others see us as professional women.

Bio: Destiny Peery, a Principal of The Red Bee Group, is a social psychologist and legal scholar who specializes in the study of identity, bias and discrimination, diversity, equity and inclusion, including their intersections with the law and in spaces within the legal profession. Destiny has taught at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law and Duke University School of Law. She also has extensive experience facilitating workshops on cognitive and implicit biases and diversity and inclusion-related topics across the legal profession and other professional communities. Destiny has served as a primary investigator for research on diversity in the legal profession for the American Bar Association (ABA) and the National Association of Women Lawyers (NAWL). She holds a JD and a PhD in social psychology from Northwestern University.

Participants will receive 1 MCLE Ethics Credit in Diversity, pending approval from The MCLE Board of the Supreme Court of Illinois and The Illinois Supreme Court Commission on Professionalism and Civility.
